I recently went to UNLV's Fall Marketplace (Career Fair). After having gone through most of the employers found on the website, I wasn't expecting to find any job that would take me having Bachelor's of Biological Science. There just weren't any employers there geared toward science majors. On the website, employers would list which colleges they were recruiting from, and may list "Sciences", but com'on... what are companies like Nationwide Insurance and Enterprise Rent-A-Car going to want a Science major? I approached all these companies, and of course, was met with the response that "Well, we don't have jobs geared in science, but if you want to work in Sales, we could take you." It was disheartening. However, I walked up the State of Nevada Health Division thinking it was as close to Science I could find. Turns out, the guy I talked to said "YES", that they had openings, and by already having my degree, all I needed to do was apply, and they may take me. He even said I was "perfect" after taking a glance at my resume. Feeling a little uplifted, I immediately went home, filled out an application for one of their entry level positions, and now... I wait. The job I put in my application is for a "Health Facilities Surveyor" meaning I would go and inspect medical sites and equipment... and with a listed salary of 40-59 thousand a year, I'm truely excited about the possibility of getting this job. However, I have no idea how many people are applying, or when they plan on looking at my application... so... I am only sitting and waiting, and praying. God knows if I got that job I'd be set.

But... with that simmering in the backburner, I'm still preparing as if I won't get that "dream job"... I'm still putting in my application to the Clinical Lab Science program at UNLV (due on Nov.1, and I still have to write an essay and make sure my recommendations are made and sent). I'm still working with UNLV to make sure I have possible financial aid (re-did my Fafsa, and since I'm not a grad student, I'm considered "dependent" for another year, making them consider my dad's income when he doesn't pay for ANYTHING for me), so I'm kinda screwed and may end up with loans.

I"m still looking for a possible office or retail job as well, in case the Health Division job doesn't pan out. I've got 2 years of retail experience, 2 years of office experience, so I can fit most "requirements", but finding a job itself is difficult. I search every day the same sites... Monster, Careerbuilder, HotJobs, Craigslist, Review Journal Classifieds, MGM Employment, Venetian/Palazzo Employment... and more. Its become a ritual... search, and if I fit, throw out a resume. Most go unresponded to, so it's pretty bleak.

I don't go out anymore, since I absolutely have no expendable money. I scrimp with every chance I get, but for the most part, I stay home. Recently, I've been getting a bit stir-crazy, since I mostly stay in my room, watching TV or being on the computer. I still keep my dad's place as clean as possible, so it's one less thing my dad has to worry about.

Even though I feel stuck, I'm a bit more hopeful after the Career fair.. it's nice to know my degree is worth SOMETHING if not to go to grad school (and I'm sure not considering it again for a long while). It's difficult to have a science degree,and I fight myself everyday thinking it was stupid of me not to get a business degree or something else that would get me a job. But I know I would have been even more unhappy, had I done that. I'm doing my best trying not to succumb to the heavy weight on my shoulders by having a lack of income. hell, really lack of direction. I just hope things work out.. cuz that's all I've got left.
